ADULT / CHILD RATIO
ADULT-CHILD RATIO POLICY
We currently offer Fun & Family Recreational Swim Time on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. through July 10, 2022. We will resume Fun and Family Recreational swimming beginning August 6 on Saturdays from 12-5 p.m. and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. The fee for this is $3 per person and is a General Admission Fee meaning that if you are attending this program you pay the fee whether you are swimming or not. During this time, we must adhere to our Adult/Child Ratio Policy. We wanted to take some time today to talk about what that is and explain what it means.
Children up to 12 years of age must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult age 18 or older who is present with them at all times on the pool deck or in the water.
Children 7-12 years of age: Ratio is 5:1 (5 children to 1 adult- supervising at all times regardless whether a floatation device is used.)
Children 6 & Under: Ratio is 1:1 (1 child to 1 adult-supervising regardless whether a floatation device is used.) The adult must be within arms reach of the child at all times.
“WITHIN ARMS REACH” is a term used in relation to child supervision when in or around water. While this does not literally mean that a parent or guardian must be an arm’s length away from a young child at all times, it refers to them being able to respond and react should something happen to the child. This still allows children to swim and play, but ensures that parents are actively supervising and able to intervene if the child gets in trouble.
Children 13-17 may be dropped off or swim without supervision; however, are not considered old enough to be guardian/adult.
A swim test can be offered by staff for children age 6 and under. Those who pass will be treated as age 7 to fulfill this requirement. The swim test must be conducted in deep water, without a floatation device, and will be a continuous swim.
