Possumhaw

Most people when they hear the word “Holly” they think of an the popular evergreen, glossy leaf, large shrub with red berries (Chinese Holly).   However, there is a holly that is native to our area that is deciduous, has small leaves that turn yellow and drop in the fall and yes has red berries.  The Ilex decidua, Possumhaw Holly is a small tree or large shrub ranging from 15 to 30’ tall with pale gray branches.  The plant can grow in full sun where it produces more berries and can take shade as well.  I like the plant for its showy red berries in the winter.
